Bansiram (Pran), an old peasant has a beautiful vegetable garden which he has somehow saved from the clutches of his old zamindar. Now his grandson, Chhotu (Aamir Khan) wants to convert the garden into a brewery for country liquor. Pretending to be Bansiram's protector, the current zamindar drives Chhotu away from the village and plots to grab his land, hoping he would die soon. But Chhotu returns with a beautiful wife, Bansiram falls sick and the landlord suffers a heart attack. Who will the land ultimately belong to?
